World Affairs Signature Series

The School of Languages, Cultures, and World Affairs (LCWA) invites preliminary proposals for the academic year 2021-2022 for the World Affairs Signature Series of linked curricular and co-curricular programming.

The proposed Series will showcase the School’s expertise in languages, cultures, and world affairs by linking a multi-disciplinary set of courses and extra-curricular events in an academically coherent series of offerings that address a significant theme in “world affairs.” The series must comprise a minimum of five regularly taught and/or special topics courses in each semester of the academic year, and at least one co-curricular or extra-curricular event (such as exhibitions, public lectures, concerts) each semester.

Although faculty proposing a Series are expected to work with already existing departmental and program resources, additional funds from LCWA will supplement already existing budgets and can be put towards higher honoraria than might usually be possible, towards design and maintenance of a web-site, and so on. Successful proposals could be awarded as much as $3,000 in LCWA support. Proposals may want to consider how the proposed series dovetails with other initiatives on campus (e.g., the QEP, College Reads). We also encourage faculty to link the Series with other LCWA-sponsored interdisciplinary initiatives, notably the Summer Collaborative Research grants program, the Junior Faculty Research Colloquium, and World Affairs Colloquium series.

Proposals should describe the theme for the series and list at least four faculty members (at least two of whom must be in LCWA) who will either teach a course or otherwise contribute to the proposed series. The person submitting the proposal will be considered to be the project coordinator.

The deadline for submission of proposals is March 22nd, 2021. The selection of the 2021-2022 LCWA World Affairs Signature Series will be made by April 15th, 2021. The project coordinator of the selected proposal will work closely with the Dean's office during planning and implementation.

Proposals will be evaluated on academic quality and logistical feasibility rather than quantity of courses and co-curricular events.

 Proposals should include the following:

  1. A brief description of the project, setting out a compelling rationale for the series and establishing what makes the series academically coherent;
  2. A tentative list of the courses and events that will make up the series;
  3. A list of at least four faculty (two of whom must be in LCWA) involved in the series, explaining what each one will contribute to the series (regularly taught course, special topics course, extra-curricular event, exhibition, concert, etc.)
  4. Any additional events, speakers, projects, or initiatives that may be a part of this

Please send proposals to Associate Dean Shawn Morrison: morrisonsh@cofc.edu
