About the Program

The Portuguese Program started in fall 2000, a joint effort of the Department of Hispanic Studies and the Latin American and Caribbean Studies. Currently, we have exchange programs with CEFET (Centro Federal Tecnologico do Parana) and UFMG (Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais). We also offer a summer study abroad in Brazil. Portuguese fulfills the language requirement at the College of Charleston.

The Portuguese classes are small, with special attention to individual learner's differences. In Portuguese 101 and 102 students acquire the four basic skills for communication. Portuguese 201 expands the four skills, and introduce students to brief cultural readings. Portuguese 202 emphasizes language, culture, and human and physical geography.
