The 2 Masters Programs of LCWA
Bilingual Legal Interpreting
The Masters of Arts in Bilingual Interpreting for English-Spanish continues to be the only graduate program in the United States that offers students the opportunity to receive the education and training of a professional degree-holding interpreter. The program is a comprehensive, sequenced, and integrated series of courses designed to provide the student with the theoretical foundation, performance competencies, and research skills required of a graduate entering this growing profession.

In recent years, the Department of Hispanic Studies has expanded its expertise in Bilingual Legal Interpreting to address the growing need for interpreters in the medical realm. Since 2007, we have offered a Master's Certificate in Medical and Health Care Interpreting. This program is timely since the growth in the Hispanic population in South Carolina is great. Because state funded institutions are required to provide equal language access health care facilities are faced with a dearth of qualified interpreters to meet their needs. Our program trains bilingual speakers in the essential areas of language, culture, ethics, and confidentiality, to function in health care settings.
