Belly dance is a beautiful and ancient form of Middle Eastern dance. The club, which began in 2000, teaches belly dance along with fusions of Indian dances, such as Bollywood style and Bhangara, the Punjabi folk dance.
Many club members choose to perform with the Adasi Dance Company which is a belly dance troupe made up of College of Charleston Belly Dance Club members. Performances have been given on-campus, in the local area, and along the East Coast. The troupe is planning a trip to Italy to perform in an international dance competition.
Instruction is led by Mary Johnson of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. All College of Charleston students, faculty, and staff are invited to attend on Wednesday nights from 8-9:30 p.m. Among the numerous benefits associated with participation are postural improvements, relaxation, stress release, and even a boost to self-esteem. No experience is necessary, and while there are currently no gentlemen in the club, they are more than welcome.
