Mafia in the Movies Week: Friday, March 20, 2009 in ECTR 118 at 5:00pm. “Directed by Matteo Garrone and based on the book
by Roberto Saviano,
Gomorrah does for mob movies what Robert Altman's McCabe & Mrs. Miller did for
Western. Gomorrah involves five entwined plotlines, the most poignant of which focuses on a pair of
male teens, dumb and hungry and drunk on the idea of the mob. Soon enough the grim realities of life
in a country crippled by crime devour the boys. Gomorrah is more interested in the mundane experiences
of daily life than with glamorization and offers a grim portrait of a world no sane person would
inhabit willingly.”
