Scholarships available for students in the French Department

Stephanie Sheffield Scholarship:

This was created by Stephanie Sheffield and her family as part of their commitment to help C of C internationalize its curriculum. The scholarship is designed to promote travel abroad and overseas study of French business practices.

Eligibility:

  • 9 hours of business or accounting courses completed by time of travel
  • 12 hours of French courses by time of travel
  • 4 semester completed by time of travel
  • Maintained a 2.5 or higher grade point average
  • Be accepted in a study program in France approved by the C of C faculty

Requirements:

  • Budget outlining all anticipated expenses(including travel costs) while in France
  • Demonstration that at least 10% of expected costs will be funded by themselves
  • Upon returning, submit a paper discussing French culture and business practices
  • Submit a journal of experiences and activities while in France
  • Submit actual budget report

Value of Scholarship:

Scholarship value is $4000.00 which may be shared by a maximum of 2 recipients and is available for study in France.

Application Deadline: February 1.
Application can be picked up from the Department of French and Francophone Studies anytime in September.

Huguenot Endowed Scholarship:

This scholarship is established by the descendants of the Huguenots to celebrate annually the lives of these remarkable individuals and to recognize their accomplishments and contributions to the economic, social, religious and political life of South Carolina.

Eligibility:

  • Residence of South Carolina
  • Junior or senior status
  • Highest scholarly record and potential in the pursuit of undergraduate degree in French from C of C
  • Minimum grade point average of 3.0

Value of Scholarship:

Depending of fund availability normally covers one year tuition.

Kathleen Rivers Scholarship:

This scholarship was established by Kathleen Hudson Rivers, a well known supporter of the department of French and Francophone Studies. Because of her belief in the intrinsic value of studying abroad and the importance of learning foreign languages directly from native speakers, Kathleen Rivers created this endowed scholarship in realizing this exciting opportunity. The scholarship is available to students in French and Italian programs. Each program takes turns in the award. Students should check on the availability before applying.

Eligibility:

  • Completion of at least four courses in French or Italian
  • Must study in France or Italy
  • Must be housed by host (native) families

Value of Scholarship:

The value of scholarship is $1000.00 but may vary depending on the prevailing economic climate.

Application Deadline: October 1.
Application can be picked up from the Department of French and Francophone Studies anytime in September.

The Beatrice Stiglitz Travel Scholarship:

This scholarship was endowed by Professor Beatrice Stiglitz to enable students to study abroad.

Eligibility:

  • Sophomore standing or higher
  • Declared French major or minor
  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Must be traveling on a program approved by the C of C

Value of Scholarship:

The value of the scholarship is $1250.00 but may vary depending on the prevailing economic climate.

Application Deadline: November 1.
Application can be picked up from the Department of French and Francophone Studies anytime in Octoberr.
