La Rochelle

(click here to apply for the La Rochelle program)

With a population of over 90,000, La Rochelle is a city well known for its quality of life. The region has mild and pleasant climate and its Atlantic coast and beautiful islands have made it the second tourist area in France. Ancient architecture and ultramodern neighborhoods are harmoniously juxtaposed in a city where ecology remains a high priority. Cultural life and endless streams of students and visitors keep the city squares very animated and boisterous twenty-four hours a day.

Like Charleston, La Rochelle is a major seaport and center of proud Huguenot history and culture. The two cities share defiant independence and timeless architectural design that translate individuality and charm. Like the College of Charleston, La Rochelle is an urban university that espouses the values of openness and innovation while retaining its tradition and excellence. About three hours away from Paris by high-speed train, the city is in close proximity to regional historic attractions such as Bordeaux, Rochefort, Cognac, and L'île de Ré.
