Archives: Welcome from the Dean
Welcome to the website for the School of Languages, Cultures, and World Affairs (LCWA). Created in January of 2006, this is the newest of the six academic schools at the College of Charleston. It is my pleasure to serve as the interim Dean of this exciting new academic venture. I urge you to look at our Mission and Goals statements to gain a greater understanding of the School of LCWA. We are committed to providing our students with the educational experience that they need to become citizens of the world in the 21st century. The School of LCWA offers undergraduate degree programs in:
- Classics;
- three foreign language areas -- French, German, and Spanish;
- Latin American and Caribbean Studies
We are currently in the planning phase for a new bachelor of arts degree in International Studies.
We also offer a graduate degree in bi-lingual legal and medical interpreting and jointly offer the M.Ed in Languages with the School of Education. All of the language degree programs won Commendations of Excellence from the South Carolina Commission for Higher Education based on the recommendation of a national panel. These commendations also attest to the programs being national models for their specializations.
Our major in Latin American and Caribbean Studies provides special opportunities for students to study for a full semester in Argentina, Chile, and Cuba. The School offers special academic programs that include an outreach activities in Jewish Studies and African American Studies. We also have a Program in the Carolina Lowcountry and the Atlantic World (CLAW) that does conferencing and has a research mission that has resulted in a very successful book series with the University of South Carolina Press.
For more information about the organization and structure of the School of LCWA, please click on the Organization Chart link on our web page and then visit the individual department and program web sites. LCWA is the college’s lead school in promoting international studies through a wide variety of interdisciplinary country (e.g., Italian Studies, Japanese Studies) and area studies programs (e.g., Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean). In addition to the approximately seventy full-time faculty in the school, a large number of faculty are drawn from other academic schools and serve as core faculty in the interdisciplinary international programs.
For a full listing of these programs see our organization chart and our web site search engine. Please don’t hesitate to contact me at (843) 953-5770, our main office number, if I can be of further assistance.
Best regards,
David Cohen
