What We Can Do
For your print-based publicity needs, the Design Office offers several creative possibilities:
- Large format posters (like those that hang from the iron fence around the Cistern) that have a maximum width of 36" and a maximum height of 60";
- Standard format posters (like those in the halls of the Education Center) that measure 24" x 32";
- Promotional flyers for programs, events, or for Orientation sessions;
- Program brochures in bi-fold, tri-fold, or quad-fold patterns;
- Newsletters and booklets;
Effectiveness of Requests
Everyone knows that to successfully host an event, planning is integral. Nothing botches an event like trying to throw it together at the last minute. Likewise, advertising for an event at the last minute is ineffectual. Make requests for event flyers and posters a month before the event; this gives the Design Office a couple of weeks to design the best looking material possible and still gives you two weeks to advertise around campus. Don't miss out on an audience because you decide that flyers are necessary three hours before the event.
Another equally important and often overlooked aspect of creating the most eye-catching and effective materials possible is copy. Two problems often arise when we create posters and flyers. First, we are not provided enough text to fill the specified space (i.e. using an existing poster to create a program flyer) or, second, we are given too much text to put into a space (i.e. using a two-sided flyer to create a poster). Here are some helpful ideas when thinking about having posters or flyers created:
- Posters should be to the point. Less text is better. A simple who, what, when and where with interesting and eye-catching graphics is most effective.
- Posters pique the curiosity of those people that would otherwise pass up the event.
- Flyers should be more informative and highlight the benefits and features of being a part of a program or event.
- Flyers are picked up by people that already have an interest in the general topic and want to know more about it.
