Master of Education in Languages

As our world grows increasingly interdependent and requires ever more cross-cultural understanding and sensitivity, language study and global familiarity have never been more crucial to professional success. The School of Languages, Cultures, and World Affairs, in conjunction with the School of Education, Health, and Human Performance is pleased to offer the only Master’s Degree of Education in Languages in the state of South Carolina.

The College of Charleston is one of the most robust and comprehensive institutions for the study of languages and cultures with an international reputation for excellence. The M.Ed. in Languages is a graduate degree that allows students to develop cross-cultural competence and global fluency, understand the processes of language acquisition and enhance skills in teaching others to improve language and cultural proficiency. Our program features faculty from around the world, including Spain, Belgium, Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, and diverse regions of the United States, whose research specialties and training include the most recent advances in the teaching of languages, cross-cultural awareness, and language acquisition theories.

The M.Ed. in Languages is designed to meet the demands of working professionals with classes offered online. Students in the program have the option of selecting the emphasis that best suits their career aspirations by concentrating their studies in Spanish or English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).

Class sizes are kept small to maximize the educational experience and facilitate access to talented faculty members with a distinguished record of scholarly research. Additionally, these professors are highly involved in the teaching of languages at the state and national levels. Accordingly, the College of Charleston is recognized as among the best institutions in the Southeast for language education.
