Office of the Dean
Message from Interim Dean Tim Johnson
As Interim Dean is it my pleasure to welcome you to the College of Charleston and the School of Languages, Cultures, and World Affairs (LCWA), a place where students, faculty, and our community come together to explore and engage the world. We are a School centered in humanity and interdisciplinarity – reaching out through multiple perspectives to others, we find our own selves enriched. LCWA is education and impact beyond boundaries.
The School exemplifies internationalism, offering degree programs in: African American Studies; Archaeology; Classics; French, Francophone and Italian Studies; German and Russian Studies; Hispanic Studies; International Studies; Jewish Studies; Latin American and Caribbean Studies -- not to mention seven stand-alone minors. These together encompass thirteen different languages. LCWA, however, is much more than a listing of its parts. As the name of our School proposes, the study of cultures and their languages culminates in world affairs. We are at the heart of the College’s global orientation and we are very much the place within the College of Charleston where academic disciplines merge, the realities of the world are confronted, and where knowledgeable, engaged citizens of that world come of age.
Finally, on behalf of our faculty, staff, and currently enrolled students, thank you for spending virtual time with us via our website. We are certain that your intellectual curiosity will be peaked as you consider the range of courses and opportunities for domestic and international engagement the School offers. Make yourself at home, take your time, and look through our academic and extra-curricular offerings. We will be glad to answer any questions you may have.
All the best,
Timothy S. Johnson
